I was born and raised in Portugal and from my country I inherited the love of language. We have many witty sayings and delight in conversation - a passion only surpassed by good food.
In my family, we’re not great dancers. There isn't an abundance of good singers also. But we are master storytellers. I grew up with stories and folk songs, shared around the table during loud big family gatherings. They’ve molded deeply who I am today and how I communicate.
From my background in Graphic Design I kept a solemn respect for composition - if you traced lines all over my illustrations you’d be surprised to find a strict design grid behind the image.
I mostly use bold bright colors because that’s pivotal to my approach to kid’s literature - I reserve the catharsis of dark days to personal illustrations and when I’m working for my young readers I prefer to fill their imagination with glee and wonder.
Being a mom of three children has taught me a lot about my audience. I understood that there are specific shapes, color palettes and details which light them up. And others that just don’t. That helps me not to fall on a blind pursuit of a graphic style.
Each picture book I made and art director or client with whom I got a chance to work it has brought me new skills and wisdom. Can’t wait to know what I might learn with you!
